The Township’s Books for 1912

The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, Saturday, January 25, 1913, page 15.

In January 1913 Cedar Creek Township’s trustee, Charles E. Dailey, published the township’s accounts for 1912 in the newspaper: its payments listed voucher by voucher, numbered 1 through 265, with receipts and a summary of each fund. He swore to it, and the township’s advisory board approved it.

The ledger runs from teachers’ pay, coal and “hauling pupils” to the new Leo school building: plans and specifications from Griffith & Fair, payments to Henry Hilgeman for the building, and plumbing and heating. Along the way come “call bells, Leo school,” “repairing organ,” and gravel for the roads. The ledger even records the cost of publishing: $15.20 to the Grabill Review in March and $15.20 to the Journal-Gazette in August, each “publishing annual report.”

Ledger line: April 16, No. 90, Joseph Souder, sheep killed, $17.00.
Voucher No. 90: Joseph Souder, sheep killed, $17.00.

Tucked among the school bills are seven payments for livestock: six for “sheep killed” and one, $40.00 to John Conrad, for “calves killed by dogs.” The report also lists dog-tax receipts and keeps a separate Dog Fund in its summary. The seven claims add up to $109.00; the Dog Fund paid out $110.00 during the year. The report doesn’t say which fund paid which voucher, so the match is close but not proven.

One of the farmers paid for sheep, Henry Hosler, also signed the report as a member of the advisory board that approved it. Twelve years earlier, the Journal-Gazette had defended an earlier trustee, M. L. Moudy, against a rumor that he had put the township in debt; see When Hurshtown Was a Town.

Notes

  1. "$1[?]0.00." The middle digit of the Dog Fund's disbursement figure is broken on the film; the column's own arithmetic ($178.00 − $68.00) makes it $110.00.
  2. "$17.960.09 [?]." In "Total balances and outstanding warrants, December 31, 1912." Printed as shown; the figure is a misprint in the original.
  3. "268..05" in the Road Fund final balance — the doubled period is as printed.
  4. Out-of-order dates kept as printed: "Oct. 24, No. 173" (between Aug. 28 and Sept. 3 — probably Aug. 24), "Sept. 8, No. 195" (among October entries — probably Oct. 8), "Oct. 5, No. 239" (among December entries — probably Dec. 5), "March 4" after March 7.
  5. Voucher 167/168. One voucher number between 166 and 169 is missing or misprinted; the Indiana Paint and Varnish Co. entry's number is unreadable ("16[?]").
  6. Spellings vary within the report: Klopfenstein / Klopfenstine; Dailey / Daily; Popp / Papp; Gerig / Gherig; McComb / McCombs; Edwin / Edward Paff. All kept as printed.
  7. "contrast" in the oath — misprint for "contract," as printed. "sums state" — as printed.
